Thank You Community. We're Going Out of Business.
50% Off Everything!
Like so many small businesses across the country, the economic pressures of the pandemic have become too much for our small and young business to bear. In addition to being undercapitalized from the day we opened in June 2019, Community Foods Market was only open for 8 months when the pandemic began. This led to a shaky foundation from which to endure the impacts of the pandemic: a customer traffic decline of 30%, labor shortages of 20-30%, supply chain shortages of 30-40% and the highest rate of inflation in 40 years.
The pandemic has exacerbated racial and economic inequalities and structural barriers, which has further marginalized and isolated our local West Oakland community from the surrounding region. This cut Community Foods Market off from a larger customer base and diminished the spending power of our local shoppers.
We have made the decision to close our store for good. This Sunday February 13 will be out last day of business. Everything in the store will be sold at 50% off from Thursday, February 10 - Sunday, February 13.
We thank everyone who has supported the mission of Community Foods Market. It has been a rewarding experience building community and striving for a vision of a more equitable and inclusive Oakland anchored by local small businesses that are committed to serving and bettering our people. We are proud of the fact that 90% of our employee are BIPOC, as well as 70% of our customers. We know we have made a difference in the lives of many local residents and, as we prepare to shut our doors, are grateful for the opportunity.
We hope to see you at our store one last time before we close. You can also shop online until Sunday at 5:00pm.
Thank you,
The CFM Team
